Solo Theatre
John Cairney played his first solo in 1965 and has
pursued his solitary way ever since. To him it is 'clean
theatre', an immediate and direct interaction with an
audience in the theatre. There is no room for anything
extraneous in the moment of performance other than a
complete surrender each to the other. This compact is
richly illustrated in his book, Solo Performers,
from which the script is drawn, and which tells us that
solo theatre had its beginnings as early as 1770. The
lecture also calls on his considerable practical experience
in this popular field. Not all actors go solo, but those
who do rarely want to do anything else. John Cairney's
career is proof of this.
